Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard threw 18 touchdowns this NFL season, raising $180,000 for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America through the In the Zone for Crohn’s program.

As part of the program, Centocor Ortho Biotech, based in Horsham, Pa., pledged to donate $10,000 to the foundation for every touchdown Garrard scored during the 2009 football season.

Garrard is one of 500,000 Americans who suffer from Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract for which there is no cure. The disease is associated with an abnormality of the immune system that could be triggered by viral or bacterial infections, a genetic predisposition or diet, although the exact cause of the disease is not known.

Through Garrard’s involvement in the In the Zone for Crohn’s program and efforts on the football field over the past two years, he has raised funds that have allowed the foundation to advance Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis research in order to improve the health of patients with these diseases.

Last year, he helped raise $170,000 for the organization.
